Training Keen: The Awareness Bracelet for Trichotillomania and Dermatillomania

By: Ellen Crupi, Director of Awareness

I know this to be true: the Keen bracelet is life changing for someone trying to stop skin picking or stop hair pulling. After 40 years, I'm 95% pull free because of Keen's awareness training - and my hard work to make new choices once aware.

After using Keen for months, and talking with many of you, I had an AHA! moment. While Keen's power is it's gentle reminder of where your hand(s) are, WE are the power source.

You see, no two gestures are alike, which is why our Motion Fingerprint detection software is designed to take OUR specific skin picking or hair pulling behavior into account to make us aware.

Keen's gesture detection is only as powerful as the gesture it's given to detect.

So here's some tips on how to give Keen the right amount of detail to help you build your awareness muscles.

The Rule of "One"

As we say here at HabitAware HQ: Rule One: Start with ONE!

This means start with ONE hand, ONE training area, and ONE week to experiment. We want you to get to know Keen -- and yourself before you add other gestures.

Hitting Keen's Detection Sweet Spot

Keen takes 30 seconds to train using the mobile app. Keen is looking for two important details when detecting your specific gesture - and these have to work together to make Keen work.

Keen is taking in motion and position and using mathematical magic to detect your specific behavior. Here's how each of these affect's Keen's awareness-enhancing abilities:

πŸ—Ί Position.  Just like your GPS needs to know where North is in order to take you to your destination, Keen needs to know where the ground is in relation to your wrist - is it horizontal? vertical? sideways?

πŸ”₯ Hot Tip: Be sure to wear Keen in the position you trained it in! If you wear Keen upside down, your gestures will not be
πŸ”₯ Hot Tip: Be sure to start with your hand AT your training area. (Bringing your hand TO the training area is a BIG movement that messes with the mathematical magic.)

πŸ‘‹ Motion.  When you are training Keen with the HabitAware app, Keen senses the specific motion your WRIST makes while scanning for skin imperfections to pick or wonky hairs to pull.

πŸ”₯ Hot Tip: If your "scanning" motion is more in your fingers than your wrist, try exaggerating your wrist motion a little bit during the 30-second training.
πŸ”₯ Hot Tip: Be sure to keep doing the same motion over and over during training.

As we wear our Keen bracelets, Keen is always on guard waiting for the mathematical match to our Motion Fingerprint. When it hits, Keen sends a gentle vibration and has done it's job to make us aware & then it's our turn to do our job: Make a new, positive choice!

πŸ”₯ Hot Tip: You can adjust Detection Settings for each area trained.

We have your back...If you find you need a little more TLC in getting Keen to work for you, just muster up the courage & ask!

It will be the best 10 minutes of your day, I PROMISE!!
